The city of Bogor is in West Java and it has a population of about 800,000 people in the main Central Business District and about 2,000,000 in the suburban areas. The total population is around 3 million.

During the British occupation under Sir Stamford Raffles it was the capital city of Indonesia and was also used as the capital city by the Dutch in the dry season.

Bogor is proud of its presidential palace, deer park and excellent botanical gardens near the city centre. The Institut Pertanian Bogor (Bogor Institute of Agriculture) is also located near the main city area.

Bogor is located beside the main highway between Jakarta and Bandung. Beyond Bogor, south of the city and through the Puncak pass is a large area containing many tea plantations.

In colonial times the Bogor area was developed as a centre for various plantations. Besides tea, there were also coffee plantations at Sukabumi and later rubber plantations. These plantations reached from Bogor to as far as Citereup and Bukit Sentul.

Bogor, which consists of suburban Bogor (Bogor Regency) and urban Bogor (Bogor City) is well known as "Kota Hujan" (Rain City), so bring your umbrella!
